NORWALK, CT — As the holiday season gets underway, police remind Norwalk residents to take a few simple steps to help keep their home safe, especially if they will be traveling or spending long hours away.

The following holiday home burglary prevention tips were posted to Facebook by the Norwalk Police Department:

  • Lock all doors and windows before leaving, even if you’re stepping out for a short time.
  • Use timers for interior and exterior lights to give the appearance that someone is home.
  • Avoid posting travel plans or vacation photos on social media until you’ve returned. Real-time posts can alert criminals that your home is unoccupied.
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home, pick up mail/packages, or report anything suspicious.
  • Secure valuables and keep them out of sight from windows.
  • Ensure security systems and cameras are working, and activate them every time you leave.

"A few small precautions can go a long way in preventing burglaries," police wrote on Facebook. "Stay safe, and enjoy a peaceful holiday season."
