NORWALK, CT — Police warn Norwalk residents to be on the lookout for recent scam emails impersonating city departments.
In a Facebook post Thursday, police said the department has been made aware of residents receiving fraudulent emails from the address "planningzoning_department@usa.com" requesting wire transfers for various alleged fees.
Police also included a sample image of one of these types of emails, which can be viewed here.
According to police, residents should be aware that the phone number and email address listed on the invoice do not correspond with any official contact information for the city of Norwalk.
Additionally, the bank information provided in the message lists a financial institution located in Kansas City, Mo., which is not associated with the city of Norwalk, police said.
"The Norwalk Police Department is actively investigating these incidents and reminds residents to remain vigilant for potential scams and fraudulent activity," police wrote on Facebook. "Residents are strongly encouraged not to send money or provide personal or financial information in response to unsolicited emails."
Anyone who receives a suspicious message or has questions regarding the legitimacy of an invoice is asked to contact the Norwalk Police Department at 203-854-3000 or verify any charges directly with City Hall.
