Large Fire Rips Through Former Norwich Hospital Site

The blaze was reported early Tuesday morning.

NORWICH, CT — A fire broke out at the former Norwich State Hospital early Tuesday morning, according to a Facebook post from Norwich Firefighters Local 892.

The fire at a two-story vacant brick building was reported at 5:46 a.m. on Laurel Hill Road.

East Great Plain Ladder 5 & Rescue 5, Mohegan Tribal FAST, and Mohegan Fire Company’s brush truck also responded.

Preston fire officials said there were no injuries, according to FOX 61.

Originally built in 1904, Norwich State Hospital was a psychiatric hospital and expanded to over 20 buildings in the 1930s. Closure of the buildings began in the 1970s and concluded in the hospital's shut down in 1996, according to Abandoned America.
