Transformer Falls On Top Of Truck, Killing New London County Man: PD

The ID of the victim has been released by state police.

NORWICH, CT — A Norwich man, Gary Dean Pizzo, 61, was killed after a transformer fell on top of the truck he was driving, state police said.

At 6:13 a.m. on Friday, a 2020 Kenworth Construction T880 truck hauling a roll off dumpster belonging to CWPM LLC being operated by Pizzo was traveling in a westerly direction on Champion Road in the Town of Franklin.

Pizzo's vehicle was traveling within the travel portion of the roadway when it struck low hanging communication cables that were running from utility pole to utility pole across the roadway, state police said.

After striking the wires, the vehicle continued in a westerly direction, causing the two utility poles to break and a transformer on one of the utility poles to fall on top of the cab of the vehicle, causing fatal injuries to the driver, state police said. This case remains under investigation.
