Arrest Made In Schiavetti Case

Montclair police have arrested 21-year-old Ernest Williams for the murder of a Ridgefield man last Sunday.

 

Montclair police have arrested Ernest Williams, 21, of Montclair for the a 21-year-old Villanova student from Ridgefield, Connecticut, police announced Friday.

Schiavetti was found shot to death in an apartment building on William Street, just off Valley Road, at about 6:40 p.m. on Sunday, July 22.

“Our detectives and those at the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force have been working around the clock methodically investigating this homicide. I am very pleased with their efforts leading to the swift arrest of the suspect,’’ said Montclair Police Chief David Sabagh in a released statement.

The preliminary investigation indicates Schiavetti, who died from multiple gunshot injuries, was killed during the course of a robbery, Sabagh added.

It is still unclear why Schiavetti was in Montclair on Sunday.

Williams has been charged with murder, robbery, and weapons offenses. He is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $750,000 bail, police said.

The honor roll student who graduated from Ridgefield High School in 2009 was due to graduate from the Villanova School of Business in 2013. He was spending this summer working as an intern at Thomson Reuters in Times Square in Manhattan.

The youngest of four siblings, Schiavetti made the dean’s list in college and played lacrosse and football and loved to play water sports.

Schiavetti's murder was the second this year in Montclair. A man was shot and killed on Mission Street in February. There was only one homicide in 2011.

Sunday's incident on William Street, an area not known for violent crime, and some township council members, for more community policing in Montclair.
