Ridgefield Organics Walking the Walk

Ridgefield Organics at 109 Danbury Road isn't a vitamin supplement store.

This is a fresh vegetable store that buys locally, including from farmers in Ridgefield and Litchfield, among many others. It has packaged food as well, but the star performers are the fresh fruit and vegetables.

Stand around in the morning, and watch a worker pick up every piece of fruit, study it for blemishes and remove it if any are found.

You can buy some unusual things here. The tumeric is fresh. It isn't dried, baked and ground into a powder and sold in a can.

Inside the nutty exterior is an orange fruit a bit like a durable carrot. The tamarind is a whole pod. Inside is the thick seedy goo people simmer down to make a sweetener for Southeast Asian dishes, such as Chicken Satay.

If you want to chat with someone, try owners Lisa Schmidt and Sal Sabatino. They're fun and easy on the ears.
