Community Mourns 'Sudden' Loss Of Former Fire Captain In Rocky Hill
The captain had a long-standing impact on both the Rocky Hill Fire Department and the wider fire service community.
ROCKY HILL, CT — Retired Rocky Hill Fire Department Captain Jason “Jay” Kelly has died suddenly while off duty, according to a statement shared by the department on social media.
Kelly’s death was announced with “great sadness,” the department said, noting his long-standing impact on both the Rocky Hill Fire Department and the wider fire service community.
Kelly was described as a dedicated public servant who was always willing to help, according to the department. He was known for his positive attitude, offering encouragement and support to colleagues while stepping in whenever help was needed.

Kelly previously served as a captain at Rocky Hill Fire Department Station No. 3. He was also employed as a fire equipment technician with the Bristol Fire Department, where he continued his service to the fire community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Jay’s beloved wife and daughter as well as his extended fire service family," the department wrote.

Officials said Kelly’s presence and dedication will be deeply missed by those who worked with him over the years.
The Bristol Fire Department wrote in a social media post: "Words cannot describe how much he is going to be missed, as a huge part of BFD for over 2 decades. Jay was known and loved by many, and respected for his expertise throughout the fire service and beyond. We are proud to have called him our brother, and our friend."
Details regarding funeral and memorial arrangements have not yet been released and will be shared when available, according to the department.
