ROCKY HILL, CT — Environmental officials responded to a local school bus yard Friday due to a diesel fuel spill.

James Fowler, a spokesman for the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP), estimated “several hundred gallons” of diesel spilled.

Officials believe there is no threat to either health or the environment from the spill. It impacted paved surfaces, but didn’t spread to catch basins or nearby waterways, according to Fowler.

A mechanical issue with a truck’s fueling equipment caused the fuel to be released onto pavement. An additional fuel release happened, also before DEEP arrived, when the malfunctioning equipment was moved, Fowler said.

The facility’s contractor has engaged environmental services to clean the site, and DEEP is overseeing the work.
