Rocky Hill Officials Feel Well Prepared For Possible Flooding

Despite days of rain, Highway Dept. says town drains ready for heavy flow.

The Mighty Connecticut River may overflow its banks by a bit this weekend but most of the town will be in good shape as far as possible flooding goes according to Glenn Parent of the Highway Dept.

"The television and news stations put out panic warnings about flooding," Parent said Thursday morning. "There are some places that always flood but we are pretty lucky and pretty prepared in town so we don't have many issues."

Parent said that the river always has to be watched but the highway dept. works year-round to make sure flooding is not a problem.

"We take care of the pipes and drains all over town and we know from our maintenance routine that we are in good shape," Parent said. "There are some trouble spots in town that we keep an eye on but I'm confident we'll be OK."

The Rocky Hill Glastonbury Ferry will not be operating until further notice because of the high water levels. The Hadlyme-Haddam Ferry is also not running because the river is higher than normal.

When asked on facebook and twitter if any Rocky Hill residents had any problems with flooding, the lone response said there was a pond in the yard on the side of her house.

"Things like that are more likely than having flooding over roads," Parent added. "If it doesn't stop soon, and I'm not sure what the weather forecast calls for, we'll see some ponding on yards and water in basements. But like I said, our catch basins are clear and we are prepared for the rain. I don't know how long they will stay clear but they are clear now."
