Health Fair Open to Valley Seniors

The Seymour Lions Club is extending free health care services to senior citizens, including those in Shelton.

For the price of a short car ride to Seymour, Shelton's senior citizens can participate in and gain the benefits of a Health and Informational Fair to be held April 27 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Seymour Community Center gymnasium. No registration is required, and citizens from all towns are welcome to attend.

There will be informational booths from local service agencies, attorneys, businesses, town departments and organizations, as well as representatives from regional health organizations and providers.

Free services include eye screenings from Opticare in Ansonia, hearing tests, blood pressure checks, dental screenings, stroke evaluations, and chiropractic doctor John Signoriello will be handing out literature and giving general information.

Sheri Wain Grier, spokesperson for the Lions Club, lives in Oxford and runs a business in Shelton. She volunteers much of her free time and has previously said that because she has been so fortunate to be successful in the Valley, she wants to give back to the Valley. Grier said this is an event residents cannot afford to miss out on.

"All the service are free -- it costs nothing. You can't lose. Especially in this economy when a lot of people are having trouble paying for things like healthcare, something like this is so important."

Lions Club secretary Melissa Smith Poynton agreed that there is much value in making a trip to the health fair.

"It's going to be a really good event," she said. " The Lions Club has been wanting to organize something like this for a long time. The Senior Center is really the driving force; they're putting it together and they asked if we wanted to be a part of it, so of course we jumped on board."

The day will include some fun, too. "There's going to be food, a raffle and prizes," Poynton said. "And I'm pretty sure most of the booths and doctors will have free handouts."

Lions Clubs throughout the Valley are actively involved in providing free or low cost eye care to the community. Just last month, Shelton's Lions Club collected and sorted hundreds of eye glasses and frames to be reused by people that cannot afford new glasses. They also recently had an eye screening for over 60 people at Pitney Bowes, according to Frank Yaworowski, Shelton Lions Club president.

The Seymour Senior Center is located at 20 Pine St. in Seymour. Call Lions Club secretary Melissa Smith Poynton at 203-734-1242 for more information about tomorrow's Health Fair.
