Emergency officials said two people were injured and the vehicle was significantly damaged by the tree, which temporarily blocked the road.

DERBY, CT — Two people were injured Wednesday after a large tree fell onto a car driving along Route 34/Roosevelt Drive near Pinkhouse Cove, emergency officials said.

According to a post on the Storm Engine Co./Ambulance Corps Co. 2 Facebook page, the tree is believed to have been weakened by recent storms, as well as wind and high temperatures.

The street was reopened to traffic within two hours. An investigation to determine if the tree had previously shown signs of distress or decay is currently underway, officials said.

"Our first concern is always public safety," Storm Ambulance Chief Tom Lenart said in a news release posted to Facebook. "It is unfortunate that there were injuries, and we're hoping CT DOT will continue to assess other trees in the area for potential risks."

City officials encourage residents to report any trees that appear unstable or damaged by calling Derby Public Works or CT DOT.
