'Serious' Fight Leads To Shelter-In-Place At Derby Middle School: Principal

In a letter to families, the school's principal said a physical altercation occurred in the hallway and disrupted the learning environment.

DERBY, CT — A fight in the hallway led to a shelter-in-place Wednesday at Derby Middle School, according to the school's principal.

In a letter sent to families regarding the shelter-in-place, Principal Rachael Caggiano said the "serious incident" occurred in the school's hallway.

"A physical altercation disrupted the learning environment," Caggiano wrote in the letter. "Our staff responded quickly to bring the situation under control."

According to Caggiano, the school is currently addressing the incident according to school and district policies.

"The safety and well-being of our students are our top priority," Caggiano wrote, "and acts of violence will not be tolerated at Derby Middle School."

Located on Chatfield Street, Derby Middle School teaches grades sixth through eighth.
