Video: Local Photographer Scores Cover Shoot

Sheri and Bob Grier had the honor of photographing Connecticut's Top "40 Under 40."

Bob Grier graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in architecture, "but he didn't really like it," explains his wife, Sheri.

Fast forward more than 20 years, and Grier sits focused at his computer editing a creative promotional photo for Inline Plastics. His photography and Photoshop skills? All self-taught. He's taken his hobby and love of taking pictures and turned it into a business that is currently celebrating its second Connecticut Magazine cover.

The March 2011 issue of the magazine features a pictorial of the state's  "40 Under 40." The photos were shot in January, but the Griers didn't know they had landed the cover until a few weeks before the issue's release.

"[Bob] worked probably 20-something hours total on the shoot. He photographed each person and then put different shots together to see who would look good for a potential cover," said Sheri Grier.

The Griers pride themselves not only on polished pictures, but also on overall presentation and accomodation.

"With this studio, we have the ability to have a large space. We have a kitchen, we make coffee, we have people's favorite snacks. I want it so that when you walk in this front door, it's your home," Sheri said.

While Bob is the expert in lighting, set design, editing and photography, Sheri takes care of billing, marketing, scheduling and shopping for the perfect props.

"I'll go to Stop & Shop for an hour and examine a single orange if we need an orange for a picture. People look at me funny!" she said. "But that's how we compliment each other, me and Bob. I think that's one of the main reasons Connecticut Magazine gave us this shoot."

Bob Grier Photography also shot the cover of the May 2003 Golf Magazine, which was distributed nationally, and the April 2010 edition of Connecticut Magazine.

In spite of being busy with business, Sheri somehow finds time to volunteer in the Valley. She recently donated her fourty-fifth pint of blood to the Red Cross and is training for EMT certification. You may also remember the delicious charity event back in January that she organized, !

"I always keep it local," Sheri said. "This is where we made our money and this is where we'd like to give back."

Bob Grier Photography is located at 25 Brook St. in downtown Shelton. For more information, contact the studio at (203) 922-0077.
