Video: Perillo Introduces Measure to Commemorate Sgt. Smith

The following information comes from a press release by Michael Downes of the CT House of Republicans Office

HARTFORD – Representative Jason Perillo (R-113) has introduced legislation which would dedicate Indian Well Road in Shelton in memory of Police Sergeant Orville Smith.

Sergeant Smith, well-known member of Shelton’s finest was struck down by a drunk driver while directing traffic at the entrance to Indian Well State Park on July 3, 2010.  Sergeant Smith succumbed to his injuries four days later.

Rep. Perillo testified before the legislature’s Transportation Committee this morning in favor of his measure aimed at commemorating Sergeant Smith.

“To most of us, Sgt. Smith was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Rep. Perillo.  “But those of us who knew him know that he knew he was really in the right place at the right time. For none of us knows who that drunk driver could have injured or killed if Sgt. Smith hadn’t been there to stop it. He sacrificed his own life and in so doing, may have saved the lives of many others.”

Perillo noted that Smith’s service as a police officer was only part of his life-long dedication to service of his nation and his community.

“We use the word ‘hero’ too freely in society today,” added Perillo. “So much so that the word has lost much of its meaning. But Sgt. Smith was a hero in every sense of the word. He was a Marine Corps veteran, serving two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with a ‘V’ for valor. He was a recipient of the Law Enforcement Purple Heart Award and the American Police Hall of Fame Medal of Honor. Everything he did in life and everything he stood for as a public servant is an example to all Americans of what it means to put our neighbors before ourselves.”

Perillo said that it was fitting that the location where his life was tragically ended, Indian Well Road, be named in his honor.

This session of the legislature is scheduled to adjourn at midnight on June 8.
