As part of its October 13 Phelps Fall Festival, the Simsbury Historical Society is sponsoring its second annual bake-off competition and residents are invited to participate. “We had such a great response last year during our Centennial Celebration” says bake-off organizer Julie Mackay, “we definitely wanted to work it into our big fall festival!” Competitors can enter in the junior division (18 and under) or adult division, and can choose to enter cupcakes or cakes. Entries will be judged on taste and on decoration, with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in each category and division and an overall grand prize presented. “It’s possible for someone to win for both taste and creativity,” says Mackay, “Last year we had some amazingly-decorated cakes that were also incredibly delicious. The grand prize winner made a cake that was a perfect replica of our Phelps Tavern!”
This year, when the judging is completed, Festival attendees will be able to sample the goodies. No leftovers expected, says Mackay, “Last time it was like in the story of the Grinch...not a even crumb left for the Who mouses!”
The bake-off is part of the all-day Phelps Fall Festival, which will include a huge Civil War living history event with over 40 re-enactors, craft show, music, children’s games and activities, food, cannon-firing, a visit from Abraham Lincoln and much more. For more information about entering the cake/cupcake bake-off, contact Julie Mackay at jgreymackay@comcast.net or call 860-651-9228.
