Award-Winning Ice Cream Shop Coming To Simsbury

The small Connecticut-based chain is among Yelp's top 100 best places to eat in the U.S.

SIMSBURY, CT — Folks who really love ice cream know it is more than just a summer thing — it's year-round.

This might explain the excitement of a new ice cream shop and street food eatery that is about to open soon in Simsbury even if the weather is turning a bit crisp.

The small, Connecticut-based chain is called "Grassroots Ice Cream + Street Food" and its award-winning ice cream, as explained in the company's slogan, is "wicked good."

Grassroots' homemade hard ice cream will soon be served in Simsbury at 2 Wilcox St. in the Fiddler's Green Shops, which are all located in the heart of the town's historic district.

According to photographs posted by Simsbury First Selectman Wendy Mackstutis, Grasroots' progress is coming along nicely.

"So excited to get a cone closer to home," wrote Mackstutis on Facebook.

Grassroots officials said the original plan was a November opening, but they confirmed later Friday that a mid-December to early 2024 target date is more likely.

Grassroots was founded in 2013 in Granby and it later opened up a shop in New Milford and a mobile food truck that travels in the area.

But in addition to traditional and not-so-traditional homemade hard ice cream, Grassroots is also known for its diverse "street food" offerings that offer a taste of multiple cultures.

Food available for purchase at Grassroots ranges from falafel to Greek chicken and bacon salad to so-called "Turkish-Berliner" wraps with shaved beef and lamb.

In 2021, Grassroots was voted number 60 on Yelp's list of top 100 places to eat in the country — not a bad ranking.

But while Grassroots' offerings are diverse and run the gamut of the taste spectrum, it is known for its ice cream.

Wrote Grassroots on its webpage: "We believe that every scoop should be an indulgence and that you can never have enough ice cream! We’re proud to be a part of the local community and to have built a brand that people trust and love."
