SIMSBURY, CT — Two-time Simsbury first selectman Eric Wellman will run to represent his town in the Connecticut General Assembly, he announced today.

Wellman is running for the 16th district seat, which will be vacated by Rep. John Hampton, who announced last week that he won't seek re-election this year.

"The work we have done locally to develop and pass sound budgets that invest in education, public health and safety, and the environment demonstrate what can be achieved when leadership works collaboratively," Wellman said. "Simsbury's next state representative needs to be ready to promote long-term, growth-oriented policies on the state level, while holding firm on the issues that the vast majority of Connecticut residents hold close."

In a statement announcing his candidacy, Wellman referenced clean energy, expanding open space, the right to an abortion, and investments in infrastructure.

Wellman was initially elected first selectman in 2017, then won again in 2019. He's currently a member of the Simsbury board of selectmen and is employed as a consultant who works with insurance and financial services companies to "improve efficiency and reduce redundancies," he said.
