The day-long event is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions older adults have made and will continue to make to the State of Connecticut. Senior Day will bring Connecticut’s seniors and senior organizations together to highlight key issues affecting senior citizens--to unite under the gold dome with one strong voice.

The Alliance for Retired Americans is a nationwide grassroots organization, representing over 4 million retired union members and other seniors and community activists with 32 State Affiliate organizations that advocate on behalf of America's seniors. The Connecticut chapter boasts 54,000 members strong.

Their mission is to advance public policy that protects the health and economic security of older Americans; their goal is to educate, energize and mobilize seniors to make a difference through activism.

“We are delighted to host this special day---the first of its kind—on behalf of Connecticut seniors citizens; as the state’s premier organization representing retirees, we are proud to advocate on their behalf. We encourage all Connecticut senior citizens to join us at the Capitol on April 24th,” said Calvin Bunnell, President of the Connecticut chapter of the Alliance for Retired Americans.

The day begins at 9:00 a.m. with breakfast in the Legislative Office Building and will include a welcome and briefing by ARA leadership on the organizations’ legislative agenda as well as a presentation on the basics of citizen advocacy.

Senior citizens will then call on their senators and representatives, highlighting legislation critical to them; key issues include elderly nutrition, increasing the eligibility/funding for the Alzheimer’s respite program, and increasing the funding and support for home and community based care for the elderly.

Attendees can also visit booths of exhibits of senior organizations/vendors in the concourse of the Legislative Office Building.

A highlight of Senior Day at the Capitol will be the Seniors Rock assembly in the lobby of the State Capitol at 11:30 a.m. featuring Barbara Easterling, National President of the Alliance for Retired Americans, Senate President Pro Tempore Donald Williams and Speaker of the House, Christopher Donovan

The event is FREE and includes FREE bus transportation to the Capitol, FREE breakfast and a $5.00 coupon towards lunch at the LOB cafeteria.
