The alert comes as temperatures through the weekend are expected to reach well into the 90s, with high heat indexes caused by oppressive humidity.

The Town of Simsbury said the Simsbury Public Library, 725 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, is an ideal "cooling center" to go to during the heat of the day to cool down.

The library is open Monday-Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday/Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

In addition, the town is urging folks to cool off at some of the town parks available, where shade and, at some, town pools are available.

Ultimately, the town said, folks should do whatever is necessary to stay healthy in the heat if they cannot get to a park or cooling center.

"Try to stay inside where it is cool and utilize fans and air conditioning when available," wrote the Simsbury Community and Social Services Department.

"Keeping your shades or curtains closed during the day will help you keep your home cooler."

Those leaving home are reminded to stay hydrated with water and avoid prolonged sun exposure, with any outdoor activity limited to early mornings and the evening.

Residents are also asked to check on elderly family members/neighbors and never leave pets/children in vehicle unattended.
