Rep. Hampton Condemns Education Funding Cut to Simsbury
State Rep. criticizes the Malloy administration's announcement of last-minute ECS cuts.
From The Connecticut General Assembly: Rep. John Hampton (D-Simsbury) expressed strong opposition to the Malloy administration’s recent announcement that the state will slash 20 million in education aid to municipalities. Simsbury will lose $145,729 from its education cost sharing grant, a reduction of 2.3 percent.
“Slashing funding in the middle of the fiscal year, when towns have already passed their budgets, is unacceptable. The Malloy administration’s assertion that these cuts will not negatively impact towns is simply not based in fact,” said Rep. Hampton. “Simsbury passes a balanced budget every year based on the numbers we get from the state. It seems that the reward for towns who manage their finances responsibly is being forced to pay for the state’s poor fiscal planning.” The education cost sharing cut comes in addition to reductions in the Local Capital Improvement Program (LoCIP) which provides grants for local construction projects. Simsbury will lose $157,504 in promised LoCIP funds. Simsbury’s education cost sharing grant will be reduced from the August estimate of $6,233,528 to $6,087,799.
