Simsbury Board of Selectmen Meeting Recap: Sept. 10

The following is a quick recap of the actions taken during the Simsbury Board of Selectmen Sept. 10 meeting:

Presentations of Proclamations and Awards

• Deputy First Selectmen John Hampton presented a proclamation designating September as Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma Awareness Month.
• Selectmen Lisa Heavner presented a proclamation designating the week of Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week. Sept. 17 is national Constitution Day.
• First Selectmen Mary Glassman announced that Finance Director Mary Ann Harris was awarded the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievment.

Board of Selectmen Action Items

• The board approved a resolution to authorize the submission of an application for a Small Town Economic Assistance Grant to pay for an Economic Implementation and Marketing Action Study. The town previously approved the study and allocated a portion of funds in the annual budget. No further town contribution will be required.
• The board approved a request by Finance Director Mary Ann Harris to establish a separate revenue fund for donations and expenses for the Simsbury Celebrates event. There is currently $24,000 in the fund.
• The board approved a request by Finance Director Mary Ann Harris to establish a separate revenue fund for donations and expenses for the the Police Community Services. There is currently $4,000 in the fund.
• The board approved a request from Aaron Goldstein to paint street names on all intersections of the Farmington Valley Greenway in Simsbury as part of his Eagle Scout Project. First Selectmen Mary Glassman also announced that the town is preparing a new submission form for Eagle Scout projects.
• The board approved submission of a proposed gift of approximately 5 acres of land on Riverside Road to the Zoning Commission for review. The submission was presented to the board by Bob Thomas. The land was determined to be contiguous with other town open space. Before approving the acceptance of the gift, the town will need to meet with council to determine what should be done about an outstanding tax bill of $818 on the land.
• The board approved a request by the Dravet Foundation to hold a fundraising walk on Iron Horse Boulevard and use of the bandshell at the Performing Arts Center at Simsbury Meadows on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

Recognition

• The board acknowledged the annual financial contribution of $99,000 from the Westminster School to the town of Simsbury in leiu of an annual tax payment. The school has given the same amount every year since 1999 after a lawsuit that allowed private schools to be exempt from town taxes.

Resignations and Appointments

• The board accepted the resignations of Peter Stempien as a full member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and as a full member of the Hartford Area Cable Television Advisory Council effective September 1, 2012.
• The board accepted the resignation of Tegan Blackburn as an alternate member of the Zoning Board of Appeals effective September 5, 2012.
• The board approved the appointment of Tegan Blackburn as a full member of the Zoning Board of Appeals and the appointment of Jackie Battos as an alternate member of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
