Simsbury Business Owner A Master Craftsman Of Furniture

The local furniture maker takes pride in crafting custom pieces as well as one-of-a-kind and series works at his workshop in East Granby.

With more than 30 years of experience in crafting furniture, Granby native and Simsbury business owner Paul Hahn brings decades of knowledge and skill to each and every one of his custom projects.

Interested in art since he was a child, Hahn found furniture making to be a practical, physical and rewarding way to fulfill his artistic goals while having steady work. The name of Hahn’s business, Artistic Endeavors, reflects the business and art components that make up his career. His objective, he said, has always been to be a furniture maker and he’s made thousands and thousands of pieces in his decades long career. He’s made a wide variety of furniture, from tables and chairs to bedroom sets and entertainment centers.

“It really translates into an art business,” he said.

Hahn works in a wide variety of woods and styles when working with clients and for his own designs. He said he’s trying to be more product oriented as opposed to project oriented. To that end, Hahn is crafting a furniture line and plans to bring it to the 2013 International Contemporary Furniture Fair held in New York City. But his primary business is custom furniture, turning concepts and input from customers into fully realized designs and then finely crafted final products in what he said is a very intense process.

“It’s never the same thing twice by any means,” Hahn said.

Hahn uses modern tools and has a complete shop on Floydville Road in East Granby, which stocks his showroom at 926 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury. He said the days of using only manual tools are long gone for furniture craftsmen but he still takes pride in investing a strong effort in each piece.

Hahn is proud that he doesn’t sell his name on furniture that is crafted by others; he only sells his own work. He only makes one level of product — the best he can make. With each custom piece, Hahn juggles three important concepts: cost effectiveness, affordability and artistic integrity. His balancing of those concepts has been successful, he said he’s never had a piece rejected or returned.

Paul Hahn’s custom furniture work will be on display at Holcomb Farm (113 Simsbury Road, Granby) on Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of the Granby Artists Association’s Open Studio Tour. Hahn will exhibit along with painters Pam Jones and John Walker at the farm.
