"The magnificent production is inspired by the beloved 1997 animated film and the heroic legend of the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia," reads an SHS announcement of the production.

Playwright Terrence McNally partnered with Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty for music and lyrics to set in motion the critically acclaimed musical that debuted at the Hartford Stage in 2016 and premiered on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre in April 2017.

"The spectacular musical Anastasia takes us on the epic journey of a brave, witty, and very determined young woman who sets out to discover the mystery of her past," reads an announcement.

"Having escaped and survived the execution of her Russian Imperial family, Grand Duchess Anastasia copes with her new life after the Russian Revolution as a street sweeper with no memory of her life before age 17."

The Simsbury High School Anastasia company (cast/crew/pit) of over 100 students has rehearsed the production for 12 weeks with theater director, Katrina Stodd Knapp.

“While we have certainly delved into the history and inherent tragedy of this piece, there has been great joy in discovering the deep observations of humanity that are at the true center. We have enjoyed finding our ‘home, love, and family’ as a community as we help Anya find hers. We can't wait to share it with you," said Stodd Knapp.

Simsbury High School’s Music and Performing Arts Department Head Lisa Abel shared in the excitement for the production.

“It is magical to see students, staff, families, and community members come together to create a special production like Anastasia. We are very excited to share the visual and musical beauty of this show with our audiences,” said Abel.

Anastasia will have six performances: Friday, Jan. 31; Saturday, Feb. 1; Friday, Feb. 7; and Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. A 2 p.m. matinee will be performed on Sunday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 9. Tickets for Anastasia are on sale now and only available online.
