Simsbury Manufacturer Plans Major Facility Overhaul

The town's wetlands board later this month will act on a permit application for an expansion at a Simsbury factory.

SIMSBURY, CT — A prominent, family-operated manufacturing company has big plans for its site in Simsbury, with the town in receipt of an application for a major facility overhaul.

The Simsbury Conservation Commission/Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency later this month will act on a wetlands permit filed by the owners of Simsbury-based Specialty Saw Inc.

It will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17, on the permit, which calls for tearing down part of the company's 30 Wolcott Road factory and then building a new, 2,000-square-foot building addition to the saw blade manufacturer.

On Dec. 3, the wetlands board voted unanimously to determine a permit was required, scheduling the next step for Dec. 17.

The wetlands board said the project is within an "upland review area" of wetlands near the site, necessitating the board's action on a wetlands permit.

Once the wetlands board approves the project, the project will then go toward Simsbury's zoning board for a final, land-use approval.

A wetlands commission only addresses an application's impact to wetlands in the area, with the zoning board dealing with any zoning issues/requirements for construction.

Specialty Saw was founded in 1952 by Raymond Nagy Sr. and the company is still operated by the Nagy family in Simsbury.

Specialty Saw is not about what you might find in your home workshop.

It specializes in manufacturing professional-grade, industrial saw blades that can cut a wide variety of materials in heavy industrial settings.

The official applicant for the permit is identified as Nagy Realty Management LLC, which owns the saw blade factory.

Plans call for the factory owners to demolish part of the existing facility in preparation for the new addition.
