Simsbury PD Taking Applications For Junior Police Academy
The free summer program is designed to expose children to "hands-on methods and techniques" of law enforcement, police said.
SIMSBURY, CT — Applications have opened for the Simsbury Police Department's Junior Police Academy, a weeklong summer program billed as a way to offer kids "the opportunity to experience hands-on methods and techniques in the profession of law enforcement."
The free weeklong program is designed for children between fifth and eighth grade, and it will be held from Aug. 1-5 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Priority will be given to first-time participants followed by Simsbury residents, officials said.
Police didn't outline the specific activities that attendees would participate in, though they said the program includes classroom training, hands-on instruction and practical application.

Kids should dress in clothing that's comfortable for physical activity, and they should pack a lunch for Monday-Thursday (on the final day, police will hold a picnic and graduation ceremony at noon).
An application for the program can be found here, and it must be printed out and returned to the Simsbury Police Department by May 30. The application asks students to explain why they want to enroll in the academy.
