Simsbury's MLK Celebration To Focus On 'Encouraging Words'

The event will take place on Monday, Jan. 20. King spent time in Simsbury working in the tobacco fields in the 1940s.

SIMSBURY, CT — The Town of Simsbury Monday, Jan. 20, will celebrate the legacy of slain civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. on the holiday that bears his name.

The annual "MLK in Simsbury" event will be held at First Church of Christ at 689 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury, on Monday at 2 p.m.

This year's theme is "Encouraging Words," and will feature a keynote address from Kenneth Green, a performance by the Gertrude Banks Gospel Choir, and a presentation by the 'MLK in CT' Memorial Committee.

The presentation will feature quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that have encouraging messages.

King had a personal connection with Simsbury, as he spent two summers working in the tobacco fields while he was a college student in the 1940s.
