The Town of Southbury is seeking a responsible and compassionate individual to serve as a Part-Time Assistant Animal Control Officer. This role involves responding to complaints regarding domestic and wild animals, enforcing relevant State and Town laws, and promoting public safety and animal welfare.

  • Position Type: Part-Time
  • Hours: 15-25 hours per week
  • Salary: $22.00-$25.00 per hour
  • Application Deadline: Open until filled
  • Responsibilities:

  • Respond to and investigate animal-related complaints from the public.
  • Maintain daily logs and complete detailed incident reports.
  • Conduct neighborhood canvasses to ensure compliance with licensing and rabies vaccination requirements.
  • Patrol streets to locate stray or roaming dogs.
  • Assist the Department of Health with feline and wildlife complaints following rabies response protocols.
  • Issue warnings, infractions, quarantines, and legal documents related to rabies exposure, animal cruelty, and violations.
  • Transport injured animals for veterinary care and arrange for removal of deceased animals.
  • Provide care for impounded animals, including feeding, administering medications, and cleaning kennels.
  • Support the Town’s animal adoption program for impounded and unclaimed animals.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in safe animal handling and care.
  • Ability to transport injured animals safely.
  • Understanding of and ability to enforce laws, ordinances, and departmental policies.
  • Strong documentation and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with Town departments and the public.
  • Competence in handling suspected rabies cases.
  • Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and experience and training in animal handling. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess current Connecticut Animal Control Officer Certification or obtain within one year of hire.
  • Rabies vaccination is required upon hire.
  • Must possess a valid Connecticut driver’s license.
