Despite Plan to Close Southington Rest Stop, Truckers Would be Allowed to Park

It appears there may be some adjustments to the proposed closure of the I-84 rest stop in town.

Connecticut’s Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker told a legislative budget panel Friday that truckers could still park at the rest stops that are scheduled to be closed under the governor’s proposed budget.

In an effort to reduce budget costs, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy wants to streamline the DOT’s rest area operations by closing some areas — including the stop on I-84 in Southington, and reducing hours at others around the state.

Redeker presented the DOT budget to the Appropriations Committee and told the committee that even if rest areas closed, truck drivers would still be able to park there, according to MyRecordJournal.com. Redeker said details have not been finalized.

Legislators voiced concerns that truckers would have no where to stop and would be forced to continue driving if the rest areas are shuttered.

The proposed changes would save the state just under $1.2 million, according to the RecordJournal.com story that can be found here.
