Highway Rest Area In Southington Damaged By Fire

The Southington Fire Department is still investigating the incident, which happened over the weekend.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Local firefighters are still investigating the circumstances surrounding a fire at the rest area off Interstate 84 in Southington last weekend.

According to the Southington Fire Department, firefighters were called Saturday, Oct. 18, at about 11:17 a.m. for a report of smoke coming from a building there.

When units arrived, they discovered smoke coming from two sides and the attic vent of the single-story brick building there, the SFD said.

Upon further investigation, firefighters found a smoke condition throughout the building, and it was learned a small fire was "confined to the furnace in the basement," according to the SFD.

The small blaze was quickly put out, and the area was checked for any fire extensions.

Southington firefighters were helped on scene by the Bristol and Meriden fire departments, with Cheshire and Plainville providing town coverage.

The fire is still being investigated by the Southington Fire Marshal's Office.
