SOUTHINGTON, CT — The good people at the Southington Public Library still want folks to return their library books on time or, if they owe fines, pay them.

But they're offering a way out for library scofflaws, and it might just do some good for those struggling economically in the community.

The library is fully into its annual "Food for Fines" program, which started last week and continues through Dec. 26.

Its premise is simple.

Instead of writing a check to the library to pay your late fee, bring your book back, along with non-perishable food for Southington Community Services to help those who might need some help.

All people have to do is bring their food to the circulation desk, where it will be collected and their fines wiped free.

Heck, even if you don't owe the library anything, you're still welcome to drop off food at the library.

According to the library, some of the food items needed are canned fruits/vegetables, pasta, rice, grains, and instant potatoes, peanut butter/jelly, cereal, instant meals, canned tuna, bottled water/juices, and shampoo, soap, as well as paper goods.

It should be noted that the "Food For Fines" program doesn't apply to billed, lost, or damaged library materials.
