Suspected Pipe Bomb Found in Southington Woods
A hiker found the device in the woods Sunday afternoon and called police.

SOUTHINGTON, CT - Southington Police are trying to determine the origin of an apparent pipe bomb that was found detonated on Sunday in the woods at Crescent Lake.
Police said it was about 3:31 p.m. Feb. 28 when officers went to 495 Shuttle Meadow Rd. where a hiker reported finding a suspicious black item that resembled a pipe bomb in the woods. The hiker had walked about 30 minutes into the woods off of a trail before finding the device resting at the base of a tree, according to police.
The device is described as an eight-inch long black metal tube, that is two to three inches in diameter with a small hole drilled in the base. One end was covered in what appeared to be a large amount of duct tape The device had been moved by the hiker and the original area where the device was found was located and secured by police.

Members of the Southington Special Investigations Unit and Connecticut State Police Bomb Technicians, along with Southington Fire Department and AMR Ambulance were dispatched to the area.
The device was packaged and safely removed by bomb technicians. Police said, “It appears that the device had been previously detonated. The CSP believes that the device may have been at this location for up to 1 year.”

Police also are reminding residents that if they locate a suspicious object or package, that they do not touch the object, leave it in place, move away from the area and call 911.
