Tunxis Donates Funds To Assist Ukrainian Refugees

Tunxis Community College has donated $4,300 to International Rescue Committee to aid in Ukraine relief efforts in Poland, supporting the many refugees forced to leave the country following Russia’s invasion.

“I am grateful to our community for their generous donations, which will make a big difference in supporting the many individuals who have been affected by this crisis,” Tunxis Campus CEO Dr. Darryl Reome said.

The total includes $1,600 raised in collections that Tunxis Student Government Association (SGA) matched and $1,100 from Tunxis Foundation, which the relief organization can use to provide food, medical care, emergency support services and supplies for Ukrainian refugees.

Organized by the SGA, students and staff volunteered their time at a table over the course of two weeks collecting donations from students and employees at the college.

Tunxis offers opportunities to engage in service through a diverse range of course work, student club projects and alternative break trips that engage students annually in service to local, state, national and international communities.

Over the years, projects have included collections to aid U.S. and global humanitarian efforts, providing dental hygiene services for uninsured Connecticut residents as well as populations in South America, projects on several Native American reservations, enlisting as mentor-tutors in the Bristol Public Schools, and volunteering for Hands on Hartford’s Peter’s Retreat program, Imagine Nation Museum, Urban Oaks Organic Farm and the Tunxis student food pantry.
