SOUTH WINDSOR, CT — An investigation which began upon discovery of a dog fastened to a tree in a wildlife sanctuary last month resulted in the arrest Thursday of the dog's owner.

Around 11 a.m. on April 22, police responded to the Frank Niederwerfer Wildlife Sanctuary upon a report of a barking dog. A citizen had found the dog fastened to a tree, with a branch placed through its collar, which prompted a criminal investigation.

No cameras at local residences captured the area where the dog was left, hampering the investigation. However, the dog was found wearing a collar bearing the name "Kobe," police said.

A warrant was obtained for the dog's owner, and Janiya N. Bradford, 26, of Manchester turned herself in Thursday morning at police headquarters. She was charged with animal cruelty and tethering a dog to a stationary object.

Bradford was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond, and is scheduled to appear in Manchester Superior Court June 5.
