South Windsor Baseball Routs Weaver 14-0

Surprising Bobcats improve to 10-4 on the year.

Defense is the name of the game for the South Windsor High baseball team, which improved to 10-4 on the year with a 14-0 victory over Weaver on Friday in South Windsor.

Indeed, head coach Jim Abbott said that, after starting the season with a bad loss to Simsbury that included several untimely errors, the Bobcats improved their defense, which has led to a resurgence this season.

“We work on it every day,” Abbott said. “It is a point of emphasis.”

That improvement led the state Class LL runners up to seven straight victories before they dropped two of three leading into the Weaver game.

South Windsor has qualified for the state tournament and is a half game out of first place in the CCC North.

“We’re very happy where we are right now,” Abbott said. “Obviously we want more. I knew we had some talent, I just didn’t expect us to retool this quickly.”

In the victory over Weaver, Alex Hughes went 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs, as the Bobcats were powered by a 9-run third inning to earn the victory.

Now comes the home stretch, where South Windsor has six game against quality opponents, starting with a road game at Manchester on May 11.

“We’re going to find out what we are [in those games],” Abbott said. “The goal is to go on a little run.”
