South Windsor Mayor's Lawn Turned Into Carrot Patch For A Good Cause

Mayor Tom Delnicki's lawn was turned into a carrot patch on Thursday by the South Windsor FOOD Alliance.

The purpose of planting the 80 paper carrots on Delnicki's lawn was to promote the Plant-A-Carrot campaign and the plant sale at the Charles N. Enes Community Center on Saturday.

Both events are efforts to raise funds for the South Windsor Farmers' Market, which is sponsored by the FOOD Alliance.

"Farmers' markets are non-profit, so without fundraisers we'd have no equipment or special events," said Stephanie Young, one of the managers of the farmers' market.

The carrot planting didn't phase Delnicki at all. Indeed, he's known throughout the region for his ornate holiday lawn displays.

"All I can say is it's a good thing Peter Rabbit was here to protect the carrots," Delnicki quipped before turning serious. "This is wonderful. All the money raised goes to the FOOD Alliance. It's a big help to the community.

"It's people like this that make South Windsor the community that it is."

The FOOD Alliance will sell carrots - $5 for one, $9 for two - through October. The plant sale, which will feature four farmers, two of whom will be organic, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
