South Windsor Medication Disposal Drop Box Program Off to Successful Start
After just four weeks, the drop box has filled up, according to Chief of Police Matthew Reed.

The medication disposal drop box program at the South Windsor Police Department is off to a successful start.
Chief of Police Matthew Reed said that after just one month of use, the box is overflowing with unused medication.
“We knew the program would be popular,” Reed said in a telephone interview. “Every other community has had a great response. We publicized it, Sgt. [Thomas] Field does a lot of work at community center and he makes sure people knew the program is available.”
Reed expects that in three weeks, the box will be full again.
"I’m just happy the medications are out of the cabinets, out of houses where there is less of an opportunity for kids or teens or someone prone to [use the medications illicitly],” Reed said. “It’s also out of of our sewer treatment plant and out of our storm drains [and wastewater system].”
The medication that has been dropped off will now be disposed of in the town of Vernon, which recently acquired an incinerator designed to destroy narcotics.
“We’ll be able to destroy it at no cost,” Reed said.
