WILLINGTON, CT — A driver gave a confusing explanation for a crash on Interstate 84 in Willington, state police said.

According to a crash report, at 5:40 a.m. on New Year's Day, a 2021 Nissan Rogue being driven by a 19-year-old from Mount Vernon, NY, was headed west in the right lane about a half-mile past Exit 71 before it crashed.

When state police encountered the vehicle it had heavy front-end damage, according to a crash report.

The driver told state police he must have fallen asleep after setting the vehicle's cruise control and woke up to "am impact," according to a crash report. A trooper patrol a mile-and-a-half area and could not find any damage left behind, according to a crash report.

The driver was subsequently cited for a lane violation, state police said.
