Senate Passes Bill Imposing Speed Limit On Lake In Tolland County

UNION, CT — State Sen. Jeff Gordon (R-35th District) Thursday announced the unanimous passage of S.B. 313, "An Act Establishing a Speed Limit for Lake Mashapaug in Union."

He called it "a major victory for public safety and quality of life for residents and visitors of the area."

S.B. 313 addresses long-standing concerns about excessive speeding on Lake Mashapaug, where personal watercraft and boats have frequently exceeded the 10-mph limit, creating hazardous conditions and disturbing the "tranquil" environment of the lake and Bigelow Hollow State Park, Gordon said. Under current DEEP regulations, towns have been unable to post speed limit signage, complicating enforcement efforts and frustrating local stakeholders, he said.

The legislation remedies this issue by granting the town of Union the authority to post speed limit signs on Lake Mashapaug, thereby enhancing DEEP and local enforcement efforts and "ensuring a safer, more peaceful experience" for all who use the lake, he said.

"For months, I’ve worked closely with residents, local officials, DEEP, and State Rep Kurt Vail to find a common-sense solution to this problem. S.B. 313 is that solution," Gordon said. "I’m proud that it passed the Senate and that it received unanimous support. This legislation is a reflection of what happens when community voices are heard and lawmakers work together for the good of the people. Thank you to my colleagues, Sen. Lopes and Rep.
