“All the students who participated had previously indicated an interest in electromechanical technology, so we wanted to show them the types of careers available in this field,” said Steve Chickosky, production manager, who organized the tour. “We broke them into three smaller groups to give everyone a chance to see our systems and technology in action and ask questions.”
Eppendorf products are used in clinical, academic and industrial research laboratories including in the pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical and food industries. Its product range includes pipettes and automated pipetting systems, dispensers, centrifuges, mixers, spectrometers and DNA amplification equipment, as well as ultra-low temperature freezers, fermenters, bioreactors, CO2 incubators, shakers and cell manipulation systems.

Over the course of three hours, the students learned about the production of pipettes from start to finish, starting with the incoming raw materials through production, assembly, packaging and distribution. In the lab products/bio processing area, students saw the assembly processes for centrifuges, shakers and other laboratory equipment. Finally, in the service area, they learned how automated pipetting and centrifugation equipment works.
The experience concluded with the group coming back together for a question-and-answer session and to learn more about the education and training needed to work for a company like Eppendorf.
“The students were all very engaged and interested throughout the day,” said Chickosky. “They were curious and asked great questions. I hope we’ll see some of them working with us in the years to come.”
