WILLINGTON, CT — School system officials in Willington are sending a stern message to those traveling near Hall Memorial School.

Slow down.

"Despite flashing school zone lights, radar signs displaying a driver's speed and a crosswalk with flashing lights, we continue to see dangerous drivers speed through the Hall Memorial School zone," Superintendent of Schools Phil Stevens said in a letter to the community.

He wasn't exaggerating. The markings along the 100 block of River Road can probably be seen from space.

The 25 mph school zone speed limit is in effect from 7 to 8 a.m. and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

River Road is also state Route 32 and the primary parking lot is located across the road from the school.

"Mornings are extremely busy in front of Hall School as students are being dropped off, the staff is crossing the road in the crosswalk and buses are pulling in-and-out of the HMS driveway," Stevens continued. "Please consider this letter a personal request to slow down in the school zone. Your diligence in slowing down will improve the safety of our students."

State police have been monitoring the road.

Said Stevens to that, "Connecticut law allows fines over $400 for speeding in a school zone, passing a school bus or for cell phone use while driving. Speeding and distracted driving are the primary causes of school zone injuries. Please slow down and pay attention."
