Julia A. Stark School Hosts Special 'Thank You' for Veterans

On Monday morning, the third grade class of Julia A. Stark Elementary School played host to a packed auditorium in celebration of our nation's veterans, singing a number of patriotically-themed songs with letters written to veterans thanking them for their service sprinkled throughout the performances. Fourth and fifth graders also joined the packed auditorium.

The Veterans Day celebration featured the attendance of a number of Stamford veterans, including U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and State Senator Carlo Leone.

Also in attendance were representatives from Cablevision, who were donating $2,500 to the Peter Wojtecki Foundation for Veterans Assistance through their Power To Learn community service program. 

"I'm particularly [thankful for the] service and sacrifice we've received from our service men and women throughout history," Blumenthal said during a speech to those in attendance, and thanked Cablevision for their contribution. "We have, not only to remember, but to celebrate our veterans. 'Power To Learn' is not just a teaching tool, but also a way to say thank you."

Blumenthal told the children saying thank you was the most important thing they could do when they see veterans in their daily lives.

"You should say thank you, they will be role models for you," Blumenthal said, adding events like Monday's are a good way for the community to continue to show its veterans it cares about them. Leave no veteran behind. This is a moving and inspiring way to say thank you."

Leone, an Air Force veteran, echoed the sentiment of Blumenthal, a Sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserves. Leone said Monday was important to show veterans how thankful the community was, but told students it was important to remember to thank them year-round.

"We have to make sure we honor our veterans and make sure they know we appreciate their service. We want everyone to thank a veteran," Leone said prior to the tribute. During the presentation Leon reminded students just how many people made Monday possible. "A whole lot of people make today special. We must honor our vets for what they've done, for what they continue to do in active service, the sacrifices they've made that allow us to do all these activities."
