Local businesses are the heart of our communities. Patch had a chance to talk with Jessica Curtis Johnson, Founder + CEO, of LaSource.

Patch: Tell us a bit about your business or organization:
Jessica Curtis Johnson: LaSource is a boutique featuring a curated collection of best-in-class intimates, sleepwear, swimwear, resortwear and gifts. We really set out to flip the model of the traditional lingerie store on its head. Our mission is to support women in their everyday lives and to truly help them feel their best. We believe that when our women are cared for, our entire human community thrives. Our name LaSource is in honor of women serving as the source of life, love, beauty and bounty.

Patch: How long have you been doing business in town?
Jessica Curtis Johnson: We opened in November 2023, so we're excitedly coming up on our one-year anniversary. We have loved being a part of the Darien community thus far and look forward to announcing our second Fairfield County boutique soon.

Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
Jessica Curtis Johnson: I You could say that I'm naturally a lover of beautiful things. I started ballet at the age of 8, mostly for the costumes and ended up getting a professional contract eleven years later. I have always been drawn to the idea that a garment can truly enhance the line of the body in the most remarkable way and my grandmother always encouraged me to wear what I wanted. Garments are like wine, you don't need to fully understand them, but you do need to know what you love and stay true to yourself. On the flip side of that, as a former Victoria's Secret customer in my 20s and now as a 40-something mother of two pre-teen boys, I just abhor the imposed seduction that is being placed on our women and girls, as well as the impact this has on how our boys and men perceive them. We wanted to take this product and present it in a new light, one that is healthy, supportive and nurturing - because our minds and bodies deserve it, as do our relationships.

Patch: What's the most common piece of advice you give to customers?
Jessica Curtis Johnson: One, please make sure you have three to five bras in your rotation. So many women are wearing the same singular bra every single day. It's not good for their body or the bra. Get in for a fitting every year just to make sure that you are in the proper size. So many women got measured once in their twenties and then the case is closed - that is the size they buy for the rest of their lives. Women's bodies are constantly changing as we go through life cycles and we need to make adjustments. Many women have two sizes in their top drawer as they go through even their monthly cycle. The stat is that 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra and that has detrimental effects to fit, comfort and the movement of fluids in their upper body. We offering fittings by walk-in or appointment on our website www.lovelasource.com

Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Jessica Curtis Johnson: The most satisfying part of our job is having a woman come in feeling one way - maybe not so great about how she looks and then walking out feeling fresh and enlivened by her experience with us. At LaSource, experience is paramount for our women. We really strive to stay true to honoring each of our customers unique situations. Sometimes they are coming for fun or to plan a fabulous vacation wardrobe, but sometimes they are coming to see us in a more sobering energy - a recent mastectomy or breast augmentation surgery, a divorce. There is complexity to the female experience and we are here for all of it.

Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?
Jessica Curtis Johnson: I think we offer a unique shopping environment that is beautiful and soothing. We've had many women jokingly ask if they can "live in our store" which I think is the highest compliment. We really want to be a place that women feel safe and welcome for whatever purpose, even if its just to stop in and say "hello" to our team. We have many customers that stop in weekly just to check in and we love that touch point.
