Speed Safety Camera Plan Approved For Stamford: Details

The plan calls for 14 speed cameras to be installed near several Stamford school zones. Here's when and where to expect them.

STAMFORD, CT — The Connecticut Department of Transportation last week approved a plan to install 14 speed cameras near several Stamford school zones.

Stamford Transportation Planner Luke Buttenwieser told Patch on Monday the city is aiming to have the cameras up and running in time for the the 2026-2027 school year, although he said "it may be sooner than that."

"Speed cameras first and foremost are a safety device, and these devices are just another tool the City has in its toolbox to improve roadway safety as part of our Vision Zero Commitment," Buttenwieser said.

The Stamford Board of Representatives in spring 2024 passed an ordinance to permit speed safety cameras in Stamford, and later reviewed and approved a slate of locations. The overall plan needed final approval from CTDOT.

The 14 cameras will be located near Cloonan Middle School; Dolan Middle School; K.T. Murphy Elementary School; Springdale Elementary School; Stamford High School; Stark Elementary School; Strawberry Hill School; and Toquam Elementary School.

Stamford officials used several factors to determine the locations for the cameras, including the percentage of students who walk to school in a particular area, whether the location is on a high injury network road, and if there is a demonstrated speeding issue (85th Percentile Speed 6 mph or greater than posted speed limit).

Additionally, CTDOT requires that crash history, average daily traffic, traffic stop history, municipal poverty rate, and roadway geometry be considered when selecting speed camera locations.

Under the plan in Stamford, vehicle owners will be ticketed for exceeding the posted speed limit in the camera area by 10 mph or more.

All violations will be reviewed by a City of Stamford employee before being issued to the vehicle owner. The fine for a first violation is $50, and subsequent violations will cost $75.

Tickets will not impact insurance or go towards points on licenses, according to the city, and all personally identifiable information will be deleted after the violation is adjudicated

Collected fines will go towards roadway safety improvements in Stamford.

Stamford is the 11th municipality to be approved for speed cameras by CTDOT since December 2024.

In nearby Greenwich, which implemented speed cameras in school zones last fall, there is an appeals process. Officials there also implemented a 30-day warning period before fines were issued to speeders.
