Tennis Star Gigi Fernandez Joins Stamford's Chelsea Piers

The two-time Olympic gold medalist comes aboard to bring her wisdom and knowledge to the the position of the Piers' Director of Tennis.

The Chelsea Piers' has announced the addition of two-time gold medalist to their staff, bringing aboard Gigi Fernandez as the new Director of Tennis for the facility.

Fernandez, of Puerto Rico, has also won the Grand Slam doubles crown 17 times, and was named Puerto Rico's Athlete of the Century in 2010.

"The opportunity came up and it seemed to be mutually benefiucial to both of us," Fernandez said during a phone interview of the Chelsea Piers. "I'll get to help them grow, and share my tennis knowledge with Fairfield County, which is quite large."

Fernandez has an MBA from Rollins Colleges and developed and launched the sports fundamentals product line of Baby Go Pro for kids and their parents.

Coming with Fernandez to the area will be her partner and two children. She's excited to relocate to the region and said the vibe of the city suits the vibe for which she's been looking.

"There are so many things to do here," she said. "I love Stamford. It just has so much to offer. It has all the advantages of a big city with a little community-feel."

Fernandez has seen so much potential in Stamford already, she said, especially among the tennis-playing population

"There are not many places in the area where I could've ever been able to grow such a strong club from the ground up with the resources available in Stamford," Fernandez said. "I'm just thrilled to be a part of it."
