Driver Hits Pedestrian Twice, Backs Into Another, Stonington Police Say

A driver hit two pedestrians. He hit one of them then struck the pedestrian again "deliberately" in front of a cop, police say.

STONINGTON, CT — A man struck a pedestrian twice, once deliberately, and backed into another pedestrian, according to police.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian and fleeing Aug. 30.

Officers found the injured pedestrian and witnesses directed police toward the suspect vehicle, which was stopped in traffic nearby.

Officers approached the driver and spoke to him briefly. He then "deliberately" drove his vehicle into a stone wall where the victim was sitting and other people were nearby.

The suspect then fled but was stopped a short distance away by police.

An investigation found that the suspect had backed into and struck another victim after being seen speeding and advised to slow down.

Wendell Hisle, 75, was taken into custody and charged with evading responsibility with physical injury, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree criminal attempt to commit assault, reckless driving, and disobeying the signal of an officer.

Hisle was released on $250,000 bond and scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Sept. 10.

The investigation remains open.

Police said only minor injuries were reported and no one was hospitalized.
