MYSTIC, CT — James J. Sanders 71, passed away on February 14, 2024 at Mystic Healthcare, in Mystic, CT.

Jim was a graduate of Liverpool (NY) High School, where he lettered in football, wrestling and lacrosse. He attended basic training for the U.S. Coast Guard in Cape May, NJ, where he first developed a lifelong interest in the U.S. Coast Guard vessel Eagle. He was previously employed, as a CNC machinist, by Crouse Hinds, in Syracuse, NY and several companies in CT.

Jim enjoyed wood carving and rowing an Adirondack guide boat he built by hand. He was a proud member of the Boy Scouts, served as a staff member at Camp Woodland (NY) and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, in that organization. He had an offbeat sense of humor, a philosophical bent and was a firm believer in God’s grace.

Jim was predeceased by his mother, Anita (Ouellette) Sanders, his father, Lester C. Sanders of Liverpool, NY and his brother Timothy, of New Bern NC.

He is survived by his daughter, Alicia Ernest (Michael Ernest) of Weedsport, NY, his brothers George (Janet Rosen) of Milford, CT and David of Syracuse, NY, his sister-in-law Candace (Chichersky) Sanders of New Bern NC. His nieces and nephews include David Sanders, Jr. of Syracuse, NY, Alexander of Springwater, NY, Kara Sanders of Vancouver WA, Emily Sanders and Emily’s son, Ronin S. Liebert of New Bern, NC.

In lieu of flowers, Jim would have wanted his family and friends to donate to Camp Woodland
A private memorial will be held in Syracuse, NY, at a time and date yet to be determined.
