Popular Mystic Clothing Store Shutters Its Doors

A clothing brand with a Mystic location will close all its North American stores, according to reports.

MYSTIC, CT — A British clothing store is closing locations amid reports that the company is shutting down all of its North American outposts.

FatFace's store on West Main Street in Mystic was scheduled to close this week.

A FatFace spokesperson said: “We can confirm our Mystic store will have closed by 3rd September 2025. We’re focusing on supporting our store colleagues at this time. We’d like to thank all customers who have shopped with us for their support over the years.”

Patch also confirmed that a Maryland FatFace store is closed and that three stores in Maine were to be closed by Wednesday. The only FatFace locations still open in North America include those in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Ontario, Canada.

The brand also has a partnership selling its clothes in 33 Von Maur department stores across the U.S., mainly in the Midwest and the South.

FatFace debuted in 1988, selling T-shirts to skiers. It blossomed into a high-end streetwear brand with over 180 locations in the United Kingdom as of March.

Reuters said Next, a British clothier and online store, bought FatFace in 2023 for $140 million.

FatFace is in the process of closing all 23 of its locations in the U.S. and Canada, Fast Company reported in August. The business told Fast Company that rising costs made the physical store model unviable.

Retail Gazette said the closures will result in 145 job cuts as FatFace transitions to an online-only business model in North America.

"Looking ahead, we remain focused on scaling our digital capabilities and bringing our high-quality designs to a wider audience," a FatFace spokesperson told TheIndustry.fashion.
