Police have issued an alert for residents about "extremely elaborate and sophisticated" scam attempts.

STONINGTON, CT — Police have issued an alert for residents regarding ongoing scam attempts.

Stonington police posted the following on Facebook:

The Stonington Police Department continues to take weekly calls regarding potential scams involving both residents and businesses.

The scams continue to evolve and become extremely elaborate and sophisticated. It is important to remember that if you receive a call or an email that is requesting personal information or remote access into your computer be very cautious. These calls or emails can range from threats to shut off services to false claims of family members in need of financial assistance. Most demand money, gift cards or even crypto-currency be sent to avoid an unwanted outcome.

These individuals spend a significant time building a rapport with potential victims. Any phone numbers provided by potential scammers should not be contacted. Instead look up information online to verify phone numbers to businesses or organizations. It is important to be skeptical and reach out to family members or police if the situation does not feel right.
