Obituary: James “Poppy” L. Whone, 85, of Stratford

James, known for his sense of humor, generosity, kind and loving manner, took pride in his career craft and was a devoted family man.

STRATFORD, CT - (From Pistey Funeral Home) It is with great sadness that the family of James “Poppy” L. Whone, 85 of Stratford, announces his peaceful passing in his home on May 30, 2022.

He was a devoted father and friend, and will be lovingly remembered by his loving daughter, Darla Cueto and her husband, Michael, of Stratford; loving daughter-in-law, Marybeth Whone-Corning and her husband, Michael, of Monroe; grandchildren, Michael Cueto (Meghan), Brittany Gladis (Samuel), Ryan Cueto, and Kyle Whone; nephews, nieces, and many cherished friends.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 32 years, Marilyn I. Whone; and his beloved sons, James Jr. and Darcy Whone.

James was born and raised in Bridgeport, CT until he met his future wife and love of his life, Marilyn Csontos. After they married, they lived in various towns in CT before settling in Stratford, where they raised their two children, Darla and Darcy.

James was a roofer by trade and worked for various companies before starting his own roofing business of over 20 years.

He took pride in his craft by going above and beyond for his customers. He worked very hard for his family so they could have a good life and enjoy opportunities he didn’t have growing up, for which his family is forever grateful.

During retirement he loved spending time with his family and friends, and enjoyed working at Adrana’s Pizza, owned by his daughter-in-law, Marybeth, where he made lots of meatballs and great friends.

He loved his surprise 80th birthday party, where all his family and friends came to celebrate with him. Many times, over the last five years he said that it was one of the best days of his life.

James touched so many lives with his great sense of humor, generosity, kind and loving manner, and his eagerness to help family and friends whenever he could. He will be deeply missed by all who were so blessed to know him.

Friends may greet the family on Thursday, June 16 from 5-8pm at the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford.

All other services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to OperationSmile.org and St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
