Special Election Announced In Stratford

Gov. Ned Lamont has ordered a special election to fill the vacant seat in the 21st Senatorial District following Kevin Kelly's resignation.

STRATFORD, CT — A special election will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25 to fill the vacancy for former Stratford State Sen. Kevin Kelly’s seat in the Connecticut General Assembly, Gov. Ned Lamont announced Friday.

Kelly resigned from his seat representing the 21st Senatorial District, which consists of portions of Monroe, Seymour, and Stratford, and all of Shelton, the day before the legislative session began, according to FOX 61.

The Connecticut Mirror reported Kelly did not intend to take the oath for new 2025-2027 terms, and was anticipating a gubernatorial nomination as a Superior Court judge.

Lamont also announced a special election for the 40th Assembly District, which consists of portions of Groton and New London, and was most recently held by Christine Conley.

Conley was anticipating a gubernatorial nomination as an administrative judge on the Workers’ Compensation Commission, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

Under state law, the governor is required to issue a writ of special election within ten days of a seat in the General Assembly becoming vacant, and a special election must be held 46 days after the writ is issued.

Lamont issued the writs for both districts on Friday.
